Which one should I buy?

Canon 1DX provides you with speed, ruggedness, more accuracy and few more bells and whistles which doesn't affect the image quality much. Canon 1DX has been given Dual Digic 5 processors, to give you more speed, which is really helpful for sports photography. Canon 1DX shoots like a machine gun, with 14 FFPS (Freaking FPS). The shutter life on the canon 1DX is expected to be 400,000 shutter acquisitions. Higher ISO capability on the Canon 1DX – 50 to 204800 ISO. Canon 1DX has a 18.1 megapixel, it provides 2 CF card slots and camera is heavier than Canon 5D Mark III.

Canon 5D Mark III is good for wedding, events, landscape and portrait photographers who doesn’t require a lot of FPS. The AF of Canon 5D Mark III is supposedly very similar to 1DX, there’s probably very little difference between the both. The canon 5D Mark III has been weather sealed too but it is not as rugged as compared to Canon 1DX, but those aren’t the things a wedding photographer looks for. One of the benefit of Canon 5D Mark III over Canon 1DX is weight, Canon 5D Mark III weighs 950g (including batteries) whereas Canon 1DX weighs around 1.4kgs (including batteries). 5D Mark III has been given 2 card slots, 1 CF and 1 for SDXC cards. Canon 5D mkii has been given a 22 megapixel CMOS sensor, which gives you better resolution for printing. The shutter life expected for 5D Mark III is about 150,000 shutter acquisitons.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for speed, more rugged body and you have no budget limitation, the Canon 1DX is for you. Where as if you’re on a tight budget and don’t require a lot of speed then you can go for the Canon 5D Mark III.According to me, Canon 5D is more capable holding its own against its doubly-priced brother, Canon 1DX. Canon 5D Mark III provides 90% of the things Canon 1DX has to offer. Spending almost double for speed sounds like a no-brainier  for a person who isn’t going to use it for sports. Canon 1DX also has a better shutter life as compared to Canon 5D Mark III.

  1. One thing which is really much better with the 1 Dx, ist that you have more information in the viewfinder. There are Modus (M Av Tv P) and Metering info, and so on. This helps you very much when you have to change settings while working. With the 5 D, you have to take your camera away from your head to see in which mode you are :-(
